Samsung introduceerde zijn Galaxy A12 als directe opvolger van deGalaxy A11in november 2020 voordat het in april 2021 naar de VS werd gebracht. Het werd vervangen door deGalaxy A13-serie.
De Galaxy A12 biedt in totaal zes verschillende configuraties, beginnend met slechts 2 GB RAM en 32 GB opslag. Op dit moment zijn er echter slechts drie beschikbaar in de Verenigde Staten (hierboven vermeld). Welke kant je ook op gaat, je hebt ook toegang tot vier kleuropties: rood, blauw, zwart en wit.
Onze Samsung Galaxy A12 arriveerde met Android 10 aan boord, hoewel de Android 11-update met Samsung's One UI 3.1 beschikbaar is via OTA. Het draaide ook de Android-beveiligingspatch van 1 juli 2021 op het moment van testen. Het zou twee jaar software-updates moeten ontvangen, evenals vier jaar aan beveiligingspatches, die de Galaxy A12 tot eind 2024 of begin 2025 zullen dragen. Zodra u voorbij de software gaat, vindt u deMediaTek Helio P35SoC werkt weg op het instapmodel van Samsung. De RAM- en opslagopties komen uit op respectievelijk 6 GB en 128 GB, en je kunt nog verder gaan met de microSD-sleuf. Budgetvriendelijke telefoons lijken bijna vastbesloten om gespiegelde achterkanten en vingerafdrukmagneetafwerkingen toe te voegen om een sfeer van kwaliteit te geven. Gelukkig gaat de Galaxy A12 van Samsung tegen de trend in en kiest in plaats daarvan voor een matte afwerking die zacht aanvoelt in de hand. Ik waardeer ook de verhoogde diagonale ribbels, omdat ze een beetje extra grip toevoegen aan het algehele ontwerp.
Het grote 6,5-inch scherm betekent dat een goede grip een must is als je een hoesje wilt overslaan. Hoewel dat scherm vasthoudt aan een HD+ resolutie, is het nog steeds perfect groot genoeg en duidelijk genoeg om je laatste shows bij te houden. We zullen altijd prijzen akoptelefoon aansluiting, en bedrade hoofdtelefoons zijn de beste manier om van geluid op de Galaxy A12 te genieten, in tegenstelling tot de naar beneden gerichte monoluidspreker.
Samsung besloot ook om de aan de achterkant gemonteerde vingerafdruklezer van de Galaxy A11 in het verleden te laten. In plaats daarvan maakt de Galaxy A12 gebruik van een aan de zijkant gemonteerde optie, die erg snel en gebruiksvriendelijk is en het algehele uiterlijk van het apparaat opschoont.
De aan de zijkant gemonteerde vingerafdruklezer en matte afwerking geven de Galaxy A12 een strak uiterlijk en een premium gevoel.
Het achterpaneel siert de camera-array van Samsung, afgedekt door een 48 MP hoofdschieter, die buitenshuis goed genoeg werkt voor een budgetcameratelefoon (kijk later in deze recensie voor voorbeelden). U kunt ook gebruikmaken van de macro- en ultrabrede camera's voor extra flexibiliteit. De camera-app is een fluitje van een cent om te navigeren, hoewel het even kan duren voordat de macroknop is gevonden, omdat deze is verborgen op het tabblad Meer.
De One UI van Samsungis een van de betere Android-skins die momenteel op de markt is, en het is net zo goed als altijd op de Galaxy A12. Met name de Samsung Free-app is zoiets als de Discover-feed van Google, maar dan met een kick. In plaats van alleen nieuws aan te bieden, brengt Samsung Free Samsung TV Plus, Samsung Podcasts, Taboola News en Instant Plays op één plek. Het beste van alles is dat u er geen cent voor hoeft uit te geven.
De Galaxy A12 is ook een batterijtovenaar, althans wat betreft het vasthouden van een lading. Ik had geen problemen om een goede twee dagen gebruik door te komen tussen licht gamen, het beantwoorden van e-mails en het browsen op sociale media.
Wat is er niet zo goed?

De Samsung Free-app is misschien een leuke toevoeging aan het totale pakket, maar Samsung stopte daar niet bij het beslissen hoeveel toe te voegen aan zijn kijk op Android. Helaas zitten er enorm veel extra apps op de Galaxy A12 die vooral ruimte in beslag nemen. Het wordt geleverd met een volledige reeks Google-apps en Samsung-apps die tot veel redundantie leiden. Er zijn zelfs Microsoft-opties zoals Office, OneDrive en Outlook. Je komt ook Shop Samsung, Galaxy Shop en de Galaxy Store tegen - hoeveel mensen hebben eigenlijk twee Samsung-winkels en een Play Store-alternatief nodig?
Het goede nieuws is dat je op zijn minst de op Microsoft gebaseerde bloat kunt verwijderen, maar het helpt niet veel om de neiging van de Galaxy A12 om achter te blijven te helpen. De Helio P35 van MediaTek lijkt niet altijd in staat om het 6,5-inch scherm van stroom te voorzien, en schakelen tussen apps vertraagt de zaken alleen maar verder. De beperkte RAM en opslag helpen niet, dus misschien wil je de 4GB RAM/64GB opslagversie bekijken als je die kunt vinden.
Drie verschillende app-suites, twee verschillende app-winkels en een paar Samsung-winkels is gewoon te veel.
Hoewel Samsung een solide hoofdlens op de Galaxy A12 heeft gepakt, zijn de leuke perifere opties niet altijd in goede vorm. Demacrolensbiedt slechts 2 MP, en het kostte nogal wat pogingen om de redelijk duidelijke voorbeeldafbeelding hieronder te krijgen. Je zult ook geen speciale nachtmodus vinden op de Galaxy A12, dus je zult waarschijnlijk wat vallen en opstaan moeten doorstaan buiten de daglichturen.
Hoewel alle telefoons een beetje magie toevoegen na het indrukken van de ontspanknop, was het eindresultaat voor foto's gemaakt met de Galaxy A12 vaak opmerkelijk beter dan wat de camera-app liet zien. De onderstaande afbeelding bij weinig licht zag er bijvoorbeeld aanzienlijk donkerder uit toen ik op de ontspanknop drukte, en geen van beide afbeeldingen in de vergelijking zag er zo schoon uit als wat u ziet. Meestal bleek dit uiteindelijk een leuke verrassing te zijn, maar het maakt het beoordelen van je schot een beetje lastig. De portretmodus was ook niet geweldig bij randdetectie, zoals je kunt zien in het voorbeeld rond mijn haar.
Samsung heeft misschien een solide batterij in zijn Galaxy A12 geplaatst, maar de oplaadsnelheden van 15 W zijn bedroevend ondermaats, zelfs voor een goedkope telefoon als deze. Ik kon pas na 30 minuten van 3% naar 23% opladen, waarbij een volledige lading meer dan twee uur duurde.

De Samsung Galaxy A12 is in bijna alle opzichten een stevige upgrade ten opzichte van de Galaxy A11. Wat deze budgetvriendelijke telefoon wel op tafel brengt, is een goede 48 MP hoofdcamera, een uitstekende batterijduur en de scherpe en aantrekkelijke One UI-software van Samsung. Helaas missen de randcamera's kracht en kunnen de vertraagde prestaties frustrerend zijn, maar dit zijn verwachte afwegingen in deze prijsklasse.
